Dear Friends of the Mitta and Stakeholders,
Re. Developments at O’Connell’s lookout a.k.a graveyard rapid overlook, which forms part of the loop trail near the Mitta Mitta River.
This project has been a significant point of discussion within our organisation, and we wish to clarify the decisions made and the rationale behind them.
Nine years ago, the Friends of the Mitta (FOTM) was established with the goal of enhancing safety and accessibility for visitors to the Mitta Mitta River area, as well as environmental efforts. One of our initial achievements was coordinating with Parks Victoria to remove a wrecked vehicle from the riverbank. This effort was part of a broader objective to keep our Heritage listed river pristine, and encourage safer use of the trails and natural sites, particularly by those unfamiliar with the area.
Over the years, we have been in ongoing discussions with Parks Victoria (PV) regarding the formalisation of the loop trail, which includes O’Connell’s Overlook. Our discussions included the requirement for a safety railing at the overlook to comply with evolving risk management protocols.
Initially, FOTM opposed the installation of a railing, as we believed it would detract from the site’s natural beauty.
However, approximately three years ago, PV informed us that, without a railing, the overlook would be closed to all visitors, including abseilers and hiking groups.
After careful consideration, including extensive discussions with local stakeholders and consultations with abseiling communities at other sites where railings are present, the FOTM board decided that partnering with PV to install a railing was the most prudent course of action.
This decision was made to ensure continued access to the overlook while minimising the impact on the site’s aesthetic value. The board also worked closely with PV to ensure that the design would include a fit-for-purpose access gate for abseiling activities.
Throughout this process, FOTM has made every effort to keep all stakeholders informed and involved. Information about the project has been regularly posted on our Facebook page, and multiple opportunities were provided for stakeholders to share their input, including a separate meeting specifically for the Mittagundi group.
Despite these efforts, we acknowledge that some members of the community have concerns about the potential increase in tourism and the changes to the overlook.
It is important to note that the decision to support the installation of the railing was not taken lightly. The FOTM board prioritised maintaining access to the lookout for all visitors while ensuring the safety of those who use the trail as required by PV.
We also recognise the need to balance the preservation of the natural environment with the realities of highly increased visitation.
As we move forward, we encourage open dialogue and welcome any discussions on this matter. The board remains committed to the best interests of our community and the environment.
Thank you for your continued support and dedication to preserving the beauty of the Mitta Mitta River area.
Best regards,
The Friends of the Mitta Board
